Could you clarify which component is parallel and perpendicular and which axis they belong with, x or y? Does it change with the question depending on if you use sin or cos? Is this why I am confused? For example, I have mg cos theta from a different question where the perp and parallel are switched to perp in the FX direction and the parallel on the FY direction.
Hi Td, thank you for the question. If I understand correctly, the confusion might come from the erroneous rule "cos is for x, and sin is for y". The proper trig function to use really depends on the question. The correct rule is that sin of an angle multiplied by the length of hypotenuse is used to get the length of the opposite side of the triangle; whether that opposite side is the "x" or "y" component depends on the question.
Hope this helps,
Shaun
